Swelling and inflammation can slow recovery from an injury by creating pain and limiting joint mobility which then prevents normal use of the hand or arm. Therapists can use a variety of techniques to reduce swelling.
Rest - using orthotics, braces or splints
Light exercise (range of motion) to pump out swelling
Use of Cold Packs, Ice Massage, or Contrast Baths
Use of Compression Gloves or Sleeves
Elevation of the Injured Arm
Use of Electrical Stimulation for swelling control
