Managing Inflammation & Swelling

Swelling and inflammation can slow recovery from an injury by creating pain and limiting joint mobility which then prevents normal use of the hand or arm.   Therapists can use a variety of techniques to reduce swelling. 
  • Rest - using orthotics, braces or splints
  • Light exercise (range of motion) to pump out swelling
  • Use of Cold Packs, Ice Massage, or Contrast Baths
  • Use of Compression Gloves or Sleeves
  • Elevation of the Injured Arm
  • Use of Electrical Stimulation for swelling control
  • Use of Ultrasound
